Introduction
This Level 2 Certificate in Paediatric First Aid is a vocationally related qualification that provides candidates with an opportunity to study and be assessed in both practical and theoretical aspects of primary and secondary care of paediatric first aid. - TOP

Guided Learning Hours
A minimum of 14 guided learning hours is recommended to complete both the delivery and assessment of the qualification. - TOP

Facilitator/Assessor- Candidate Ratio
To ensure there is appropriate support for and monitoring of candidates during practical sessions the delivery of the qualification is required to operate at a ratio of one qualified facilitator/assessor to a maximum of 12 candidates. - TOP

Fees
Combined Registration/Certification Fee - £20 + VAT - TOP

Funding
These vocationally related qualifications attract funding under Section 96 and/or Section 97 of the Learning and Skills Act 2000 and are eligible to be used to qualify candidates taking part in ESF and SME funded programmes. - TOP

Qualification Aims
To provide candidates with knowledge and understanding of first aid to provide appropriate care and manage life threatening conditions, illness and injuries sustained in Early Years Care and Education.

To offer the opportunity for those involved in Early Years Care and Education to provide quality and effective first aid care. This is achieved through an understanding of the general duties, responsibilities and treatment principles of first aid. - TOP


Qualification Objectives
On successful completion of the Level 2 Certificate in Paediatric First Aid, candidates will be able to:

• describe the duties, responsibilities, general treatment principles and priorities of first aid provision   to infant’s, children and adolescents/adults in an Early Years Setting;
• demonstrate an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology in relation to first aid;
• demonstrate Initial Patient Assessment and appropriate use of barriers and infection control;
• recognise and respond to life threatening conditions that require resuscitation;
  demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the pre-existing conditions of common illnesses;
• recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of common illnesses; and
• recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of common injuries. - TOP

Assessment
Candidates will be assessed against the assessment criteria of the qualification via a combination of internal and external assessment components,

• Internal Assessment - Practical assessment of skills combined with oral questioning of   underpinning knowledge and understanding covering the entire qualification.
• External Assessment - A multiple choice question paper. - TOP


Target Audience
This qualification is suitable for all people working in an early years environment including teachers, school bus drivers, parents, grandparents and babysitters. - TOP

Approvals
This qualification meets the requirements for the HSE Appointed Persons in the Workplace, has received support from the Early Years NTO and approvals from Preschool Learning Alliance (PLA) and the National Childminding Association (NCMA). - TOP

Progression
The PFA has been mapped against the relevant National Occupational Standards in Early Years Care and Education. Progression from the PFA might be achieved via a range of Early Years qualifications, setting-specific awards and units of the NVQ’s in Early Years Care and Education. - TOP
